Controlling pronunciation with IPA

Updated over 3 weeks ago

This guide explains how to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to control an AI Employee's pronunciation of specific words. By using IPA characters, you can ensure precise pronunciation for complex terms, proper nouns, or unique brand names.

Controlling pronunciation with IPA

Newo.ai AI Employees support the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for voice generation. This feature allows you to override standard text-to-speech pronunciation in any text field or attribute where the AI generates audio. This is particularly useful for:

  • Brand names with unique spellings.

  • Proper nouns or names that are frequently mispronounced.

  • Homographs (words spelled the same but pronounced differently, like "lead" vs. "lead").

Formatting the text

To specify a pronunciation, enter the IPA phonetic transcription enclosed in forward slashes (/).

Example:

If the standard text "Green Apple" is not being pronounced correctly, you can replace it with the phonetic version.

  • Standard text: "Hello and welcome to ."

  • IPA formatting: "Hello and welcome to /ˈɡriːn ˈæpəl/."

Finding IPA characters

You must use standard IPA Unicode characters. You can find the correct phonetic spelling for words using online dictionaries or this reference guide. Alternatively, use the following prompt template in ChatGPT, Claude, or a similar LLM.
